Three Important Points To Remember When Preparing Your Furniture For Moving
When it is time to move house, there are some belongings that need more packing forethought than others. For example, small items, such as the contents of your t-shirt drawer, can easily be fit inside a box or a plastic container, but when it comes to big furniture items, like a dining room table or a sofa, there is no box large enough. So that you are well prepared for the arrival of your furniture removalist, here are three large common household furniture items and suggestions on how to pack them.
Sofa
To prepare your sofa for moving, have a closer look at it to see if there are any parts of the sofa that can be removed to make the sofa lighter and less bulky. For example, are the cushions removable? Does the sofa have legs which can be taken off to make it easier for the item to fit through the doorway? Remove as much of the sofa as you can and place all these items together in a clearly marked box. Next, wrap the sofa in moving blankets before it is placed onto the truck. These are held in place by adjustable straps. Covering the sofa in moving blankets stops the fabric being damaged while the item is transported.
Dining Table
Most dining tables are made of wood or wood particle boards, and these materials are easily scratched or damaged while being moved. Just like the sofa, remove the legs from the table to lighten the weight. Then wrap the top piece of the table in protective blankets provided by the furniture removalist to prevent scratches. Bubble wrap is a great protective material to wrap around the legs of the table and can be secured in place using packing tape. Make sure you put the screws for the leg pieces in a safe place so they are easily found when it is time to put the table back together. A great location is inside a sealed bag and then taped to the underside of the tabletop.
Chest of Drawers
Most households have a chest of drawers in each room, and there are several steps to take to make these easier to transport. Firstly, remove all the clothing from the drawers and place these into boxes or suitcases, or use them for wrapping around fragile items like glasses or ornaments. The next step depends on the empty weight of the chest of drawers. If it is made of solid wood, the chest of drawers is still very heavy even when empty. Therefore, remove the drawers so these can be stacked separately onto the truck. If the chest of drawers is made of particleboard and is quite light once emptied, leave the drawers in place, but use packing tape to keep them closed while this piece of furniture is in transit.
