Moving delicate artwork

About Me

Moving delicate artwork

I have worked in remote communities for many years. I loved the connection I formed with the communities, and I amassed quite a collection of Aboriginal artwork on bark. It's actually worth quite a bit of money now, in addition to the massive sentimental value when I recall my relationships with the artists who made the work. I still have to move for work regularly, so I've become quite an expert on how to move delicate artworks on non-traditional formats. This blog is all about strategies for moving and storing delicate artwork so they can be enjoyed for years to come.

How to Safely Prepare Your Mirrored Furniture for a Move

According to a survey by the Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA), most Australians care more about saving money during a move than they do about ensuring the safety of their furniture. Unfortunately, this leads to the whole moving experience costing far more than they expected due to furniture being damaged or broken during their move to a new home.

Aside from choosing a reputable removalist and purchasing the right insurance coverage for your move, you can also make sure that your furniture is adequately packed for transit. However, when packing mirrored furniture, such as mirrored dressers, chests and slim tallboys, extra care must be taken as even the slightest knock could cause catastrophic damage.

Furniture with functional mirrors such as vanities or dressers, where the mirror can be wrapped separately, are not classed as mirrored furniture and are much easier to prepare for a move.

When packing your mirrored furniture be sure to take the following into consideration.

Remove Drawers

With normal wooden furniture it's generally okay to leave drawers in. When it comes to mirrored furniture, it is best to remove the drawers to avoid the risk of them coming open, or getting in the way as you move them. Some drawers also have knobs that could prevent you or your movers from getting through narrow openings.

Reinforce Sides, Tops, Corners and Edges

Measure your mirrored furniture, then cut enough cardboard to cover the tops and sides of both the drawers and furniture. Next, pad the edges and corners with bubble wrap to protect them against any jarring impacts.

Secure it with Three Layers

Finally, finish off by adding three layers of padding over the cardboard and bubble wrap already in place for maximum protection. Start by wrapping a blanket around your mirrored furniture. For the second layer, use bubble wrap wrapped tightly around the furniture to ensure that it doesn't move whilst in transit. For the final layer, cover the piece of furniture in a layer of cardboard. Tape the cardboard together and tape it tightly to the piece. This will ensure you can maintain a solid grip as you move the furniture from one place to the other.

Also bear in mind that your mirrored furniture will need to be transported on a soft surface to avoid any jarring impacts during transit. You can use blankets placed under the furniture to soak up any potentially hard impacts during transport.

By following the aforementioned advice, you should be able to provide your mirrored furniture with the protection it needs to survive a move. If you opt for a reputable removalist, you will also have the added benefit of years of experience and industry know-how to assist you. However, should you choose to go it alone, the above tips will ensure you can move with an unbreakable level of confidence.
